Methodology

How this site decides what counts as trending, where the information comes from, and what it deliberately does not claim.

What we publish

One dated snapshot per day, each listing the hashtags tied to that day's verified drivers, plus a short explanation of each driver and what the tag is good for. Snapshots are kept permanently in the archive, newest first, and the home page always shows the latest snapshot.

Where the data comes from (current method)

Daily editorial snapshots. At capture time, the snapshot writer checks major news reporting for the day's drivers (events, outcomes, dates, releases) and the platforms' own public trend pages — X's trending/Explore page, TikTok's Creative Center trend lists, and Instagram's Explore and search pages — and writes up only the tags whose driver is verified. Nothing is scraped: trend pages are read the way a person reads them, and no platform's list is copied wholesale. A tag with no verified driver never appears, and a tag is never padded in to fill out a page.

Why not an API feed?

We checked for a genuinely free API that returns trending hashtags, platform by platform, in October 2026. None exists that this site can use:

Third-party "trending" aggregators were also checked: their republication terms are unclear or absent, and their counts use unknown methods, so they are not used as a source — at most as a hint to go verify a driver elsewhere.

Update cadence

Daily. One dated snapshot per day, because that is what the editorial method honestly supports: verifying each driver against real reporting takes real checking, and inventing hourly updates without a feed would mean inventing data. Hourly snapshots would require a real API feed (see the upgrade path below), and we will not claim hourly freshness we do not have.

What "trending" means here

A spike, not a lifetime total. Trending lists generally reward how fast a tag is accelerating — a lot of people posting the same tag in a short window — not how many posts it has ever had. Lists also differ by platform and by place: a tag trending in one country may be invisible elsewhere. This site publishes no volume ranking and no post counts, because it has no verified count source, and a ranking without a count source would be made up.

What we never do

Corrections

If a driver in a published snapshot proves wrong, the snapshot is corrected with a dated note saying what changed. Snapshots are dated records, so corrections stay visible rather than silently rewriting history.

Possible upgrade: paid X feed

If a small budget is approved later, the X API's pay-per-use trends endpoint (US trends, about $0.010 per request) would support hourly fetches for roughly $0.24 a day (about $7.30 a month at 24 fetches a day). In that setup the home page would refresh from the latest fetch and the daily dated page would remain the archive record. Until that budget is approved, the daily editorial snapshot above is the method — the site does not pretend otherwise.
